Municipality of St. Ulrich
The Cësa di Ladins in Ortisei is a symbol of Ladin culture. The main building was renovated in the 1980s following the Mairhof typology, characterized by solid masonry, sloped roofs, and regularly arranged windows. The expansion project emphasizes the historical identity by replicating the main building with the “New Cësa”, a linear exposed-concrete structure that engages in dialogue with the Dolomite landscape. The new building is set back from the historic façade, aligned along angled urban axes, with steeply pitched roofs and filtered surfaces to modulate natural light, while projecting elements guide visitors toward the entrance. The two volumes are connected by a low transverse building serving as a transparent foyer, integrating museum areas, the library, and the theater. The design prioritizes clear and continuous circulation, double-height spaces, framed views of the landscape, and flexible exhibition areas, creating a harmonious balance between historical memory and contemporary museum requirements.
