Urban park with archaeological area
Yvonne Garbukas, Adriana Mangiacotti, Verena Dander
The area in the south of Bolzano, which had been partly abandoned after the demolition of the Semirurali district from the 1930s, was to be transformed into an urban park. The remains of the monastery of St.Mary in Augia, located four metres below street level, together with an existing sports field, two deep wells for drinking water and the last remaining Semirurali house, were integrated into a single project. The surrounding perimeter wall not only protects the archaeological remains and the wells, but also shapes the park as a Hortus Conclusus, with numerous references to the site’s history.
