Restoration and repurposing of a historical building
As part of the architectural renovation of the existing palace in the "Ex-Alumix" complex in Bolzano, with subsequent transformation into a public interest facility, the building, which is protected as part of the architectural and artistic heritage and located within the airport’s risk zone, has undergone extensive restoration work. We have addressed various project dynamics as well as the conservative restoration measures at the critical points of the structure. Particular attention was paid to preserving the klinker and wooden floors in the corridors where possible, in order to maintain part of the original character of the interior spaces. Historical doors and windows were restored, keeping their original design and features, while the windows were replaced. In this way, the originality and historical appearance of the palace were preserved on the exterior. Inside the building, which has been revitalized through a change of use, targeted interventions were made. While retaining the existing load-bearing structure, modifications to the layout were carried out, primarily aimed at consolidation. This was achieved through the removal of architectural barriers, renewal of all installations, the construction of an external staircase for the escape route, and the subsequent securing of the path.
